Frequently asked questions

Do you have a question about Sugar Calendar event organization? See the list below for our most frequently asked questions.
If your question is not listed here, then please contact us.

What’s the difference between calendars and tags?

Calendars are for primary organization. Each event can only be in one calendar. Tags are for flexible labeling. Each event can have multiple tags. Use calendars for main categories like department or location, and tags for additional attributes like topic or audience level.

How do I create a new calendar?

Go to Calendar in your WordPress dashboard, then click Add New Calendar. Give it a name, choose a color, and optionally add a description. You can create unlimited calendars for your organization.

How do I add tags to an event?

When creating or editing an event, find the Tags section in the sidebar. Select existing tags from the dropdown or type to create new ones. Add as many tags as you want to each event.

Can visitors filter by both calendars and tags?

Yes. Visitors canview specific calendars, and they can click tags to see all events with that tag. Together these give powerful filtering options to find exactly what they’re looking for.

What are parent and child calendars?

You can organize calendars hierarchically. For example, a college might have North Campus as a parent calendar with Athletics and Lectures as child calendars underneath. This creates structure when managing many calendar types.

How does color coding work?

Assign each calendar a color when you create it. All events in that calendar display in that color on your site. This visual distinction helps visitors quickly identify different event types at a glance.

Can I display only certain calendars on a page?

Absolutely. When adding a calendar block or shortcode, specify which calendars to show. Create a public events page showing one set of calendars and a members page showing different calendars.

How many tags can I add to an event?

As many as you want. Unlike calendars where each event can only be in one, events can have unlimited tags. Tag by topic, audience, format, location, and any other attributes that help with discovery.

Do tags have their own pages?

Yes. Each tag automatically gets an archive page showing all events with that tag. These pages are great for SEO and help visitors discover related events they might be interested in.

Are calendars and tags available in the free version?

Yes. Both custom calendars and event tags are available in Sugar Calendar Lite. You can create unlimited calendars, add unlimited tags, and let visitors filter by both in either version.
